S.I. Container Builds has installed a few ADUs [Accessory Dwelling Units] there since their ordinance passed in September of 2020.
The popular program allows residents to build small, independent housing units on their property. Not only does this help with the housing crisis by supplying the market with small, sustainable, affordable homes, they also give the homeowners a new revenue stream.
The 2020 ordinance allows for different types of ADUs, reduces off-street parking requirements, and relaxes height requirements.
The city's affordable housing community urged Evanston to pass the ordinance as ADUs can provide housing for less affluent renters and others. They are also energy-efficient and airtight, and can be designed to complement the main house.
